Scottish Islands: A One Week Road Trip Exploring the Best of the Hebrides

Day 1: Discovering the Isle of Skye

The enchanting Isle of Skye is a 5 hour drive from both Edinburgh and Glasgow, and it happens to be one of the most beautiful drives you're ever going to do. Once on Skye, we recommend a visit to the magical Fairy Pools, where a short hike leads you to a series of beautiful waterfalls and crystal-clear pools. Continue to the Old Man of Storr, the iconic rock formation (as seen on our Isle of Skye travel poster), where after a slightly more challenging scramble, you'll be rewarded with breathtaking views of the island. End your day in the picturesque harbour town of Portree, where you'll find food and accommodation to suit all tastes. It's got to be seafood, surely?

Day 2: Goodbye Skye and Hello Harris!

Round off your visit to Skye with a drive to the Bucket List Print worthy Quiraing, known for its stunning rock formations and panoramic views. Finally, head to Neist Point Lighthouse for, you guessed it, more spectacular views. In the afternoon, catch the 1 hour 40 minute ferry from Uig to Tarbert on the Isle of Harris, and enjoy a relaxing evening in one of the local pubs or restaurants, ready for tomorrow's adventure.

Day 3: Exploring Harris and Lewis

A day on Harris isn't complete without visiting Luskentyre Beach, often described as one of the most beautiful beaches in the world - take a dip if you dare. Next, we recommend warming up with a visit to a Harris Tweed shop to see traditional weaving in action and grab some gifts and souvenirs (Harris Tweed collar for the dog anyone?). In the afternoon, drive over to the Isle of Lewis (technically Harris and Lewis are part of the same landmass) to explore the ancient Callanish Standing Stones, a prehistoric stone circle steeped in history and, recently the subject of an absolutely beautiful travel poster, if we do say so ourselves. End the day in Stornoway, the largest town in the Outer Hebrides, where you’ll spend the night.

Day 4: Journey Through Lewis and to North Uist

Enjoy breakfast in the bustling town of Stornoway, before a visit to the impressive Lews Castle. A trip to the Butt of Lewis Lighthouse, the northernmost point of the island, is the perfect way to say 'see you later, Lewis', before catching the ferry from Leverburgh on Harris to Berneray. From here, it's another beautiful scenic drive to North Uist. This rugged, remote island offers quite the change of pace from last night's comparative metropolis and you'll sleep well ready for another day of exploration tomorrow.

Day 5: Discovering North Uist, Benbecula, and South Uist

Start your day with a gentle stroll on the 3 mile circular nature trail at the RSPB Balranald Nature Reserve, where you'll be joined by an abundance of birdlife. Back in the car, head south through the island of Benbecula, on your way to Loch Druidibeg on South Uist, where you'll enjoy spectacular views of lochs, moors and mountains. A stop at Kildonan Museum offers a fascinating insight into the local history and culture. Enjoy the serene landscapes of South Uist as you settle in for the night.

Day 6: Barra’s Unique Charm and Ferry to Oban

A short drive over the causeway will bring you to the island of Eriskay, where you'll catch the morning ferry to Barra and explore Kisimul Castle, perched dramatically in Castlebay. It's worth a stop on the island of Vatersay, connected to Barra by another causeway, and with no shortage of stunning beaches and rugged scenery. In the afternoon, it's back to the mainland with a short ferry to Oban, a bustling harbour town, perfect for an evening stroll and a seafood dinner before your overnight stay. But fear not, we aren't quite done island hopping just yet.

Day 7: Isle of Mull and Return Journey

Your final island adventure takes you by ferry from Oban to the Isle of Mull. Stop off at the small but mighty Duart Castle, a 13th Century castle and the seat of Clan MacLean. A visit to Mull isn't complete without a trip to the colourful town of Tobermory. Enjoy local shops, galleries, and if your schedule allows, why not end with a celebratory toast, on a tour of the Tobermory Distillery, before you head back to the mainland.
